QWA QWA DINING HALL

PROJECT DETAILS

The University of the Free State approached us to redesign the Qwa-Qwa campus dining hall. Our proposal centered around creating a central serving area and opening the existing cylinder to outside.

Working with the existing Kahn-inspired drum, the walls were punctured and windows that would allow much more sunlight into the dark interior were inserted, allowing the space to be more habitable in the harsh winter.

The juxtaposition of the new insertions versus the existing brickwork is buffered with concrete frames.

Brightly coloured steel plates and paint finishes that resemble the bright colours used on the adjacent student housing were used. (See Qwa-Qwa Student Housing). The rationale behind the use of bright colour, is to enhance and add identity to the campus. The consistency of the colours used serve as orientation markers as well.
