URBAN HOTEL
PROJECT DETAILS
The clients, both involved in the hospitality industry in Bloemfontein, wished to establish a hotel that would be both affordable, and also appeal to the younger market.
The hotel is situated on a busy intersection close to the Free State Stadium, large shopping centers, hospital and several education facilities.
Due to budget restraints, the building has a compact design with the minimum of public spaces. The entrance area doubles as breakfast area and reception. The small bathrooms are separated from the rooms by glass sheets, and floating shelves provide space for clothing. A limited palette of materials was used. These include red face brick, painted plaster, sheet metal roofs, whilst the interiors reflect a modernist eclecticism. The red neon cube on the corner of the intersection serves as an urban marker.
The concept is proving successful and the clients are investigating expanding to other areas.
